Position: Project Administration Officer – CSJ

Joy Type: full-time (12 weeks)

Hourly Wage: $18.00

Location: Corner Brook, NL

Tasks and Responsibilities: Reporting to the business development manager, the project administration officer will help co-ordinate and plan the 2023 cruise season. The successful candidate will:

Assist with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the cruise program at the Port of Corner Brook including the cruise welcome program, shuttle bus service, tour operations, security, and health and safety protocols.
Supervise staff and the overall operations during cruise ship visits.
Monitor and provide regular updates to the Corporation’s social media channels.
Assemble data and prepare special reports, manuals, and correspondence.
Oversee and co-ordinate office administrative procedures.
Complete other administrative duties including but not limited to data entry, answering phones, scheduling meetings, organizing files, and addressing general inquiries.

Position Requirement: The ideal candidate is an indigenous youth, currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution studying business, marketing or a similar program. The requirements of this position also include:

Strong verbal and written communication skills and stakeholder engagement.
Proficient in MS Office and various social media platforms, and familiar with website content management systems such as WordPress.
Strong attention to detail, prioritization, problem solving and organizational skills.
Supervisory experience, working with volunteers and/or marketing experience preferred, but not required.
Ability to take initiative and work independently to complete assignments with minimal direction.

Eligibility: This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program. The successful candidate must meet the following criteria to be eligible for the grant.

Between the ages of 15 and 30 years of age
Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
Valid Social Insurance Number
Legally entitled to work in Canada

Call for Shuttle Bus Proposals

The Port of Corner Brook cruise program is serviced by regular shuttles to and from the port and downtown. This is a complementary service that is provided to cruise guests and crew free of charge.

The Corner Brook Port Corporation (CBPC) invites proposals from qualified transportation companies to provide a shuttle bus service for the 2023 cruise season. Proposals must be submitted by email, fax or in-person. The deadline for proposals is Wednesday, April 5.

Port of Corner Brook expecting record cruise season

The Port of Corner Brook has record bookings for the 2023 cruise season, following a celebratory post-pandemic return to cruise in 2022.

The 2022 cruise season results exceeded expectations following a two-year pause due to COVID-19 restrictions. The season concluded with 23 cruise ship calls carrying almost 26,000 passengers, up 3.25% from 2019. “Expecting ship capacities would be down, we didn’t anticipate reaching 2019 numbers in the first year of cruise resumption, but I’m happy to report that we surpassed these results,” says Jennifer Hartley, Business Development Manager. The cruise industry provides significant economic value to the region and is essential to the tourism sector. Contributing to the overall success for 2022 was the increase of cruise ship occupancy rate throughout the year as COVID-19 restrictions eased, and consumer confidence in the industry returned. The total ‘spend’ from cruise lines and the 40,879 cruise guests and crew combined with indirect expenditures resulted in a estimated total economic impact for the region of $8.6 million for the 2022 season.

The focus for the 2022 season was to ensure the safe resumption of the local cruise sector for passengers, crew, port staff and, of course, the community. Creating a positive experience for all stakeholders was a crucial component in helping to make this season a success. During the pandemic, the Port of Corner Brook launched a weekly international container service which would affect the berthing schedule and the cruise welcome program. Throughout last season, the Port added many new upgrades including a 100 ft tender dock and gangway that is positioned along the south part of the wharf to allow vessels to tender guests to shore when the berth is unavailable. Tendering is a standard service in the cruise industry and enables the Port of Corner Brook to be more flexible with berth reservations. We saw three cruise ships take advantage of this service and currently have four cruise ships booked at anchor for next season.

The Regent Seven Seas Navigator will return in May 2023, officially kicking off the Port of Corner Brook cruise season in their first of five calls. The largest ship to call the Port is the Norwegian Joy, which is 333 metres long, carries 3,800 passengers along with 1800 crew and will make three calls this season. Marking the end of the cruise season will be the Oceania Cruises’ Insignia on November 3.

Call for Cruise Vendors

The Port of Corner Brook is accepting applications for vendors for the 2022 cruise ship season. Vendors will be located at the newly constructed cruise passenger welcome park at the Port of Corner Brook. Selected vendors can lease a salt box style market shed for the season starting August, however preference will be given to vendors who commit to operating for the full season.

The market will be open for cruise passengers on ship days, as well as other tourism functions such as motorcoach tours. The park will only be open to the general public for special events. There will be scheduled times for vendors to access the sheds on days when there are no cruise vessels, in the event that they need to access their inventory or prepare for upcoming days.

We are looking forward to a busy season with 24 vessels scheduled from Friday, May 6th until Sunday, October 16th. The full cruise ship schedule can be viewed here.

Mural Project Continues with Artist Selection

The Port mural is part of the CBPC’s cruise enhancement project which aims to create a more welcoming and inviting experience during the arrival of cruise ships. Our goal is to select a mural that not only captures the culture and essence of Newfoundland and Labrador but creates a sense of place, destination, vibrancy, and adds character to the area.

Eight proposals were submitted for consideration, each portraying Newfoundland and Labrador culture through a variety of styles, techniques, and designs. It was a difficult decision, therefore the team decided to short-list the proposals to allow for more discussion and reflection. The team is happy to announce the selection of Marshall Borland and Kelsey Street (see biographies below).

Marshall Borland and Kelsey Street studied visual arts at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland. Marshall and Kelsey’s mural incorporates a collage of images using mixed media including aerosol and acrylic paint. The mural depicts Corner Brook’s strong sense of culture; the thriving arts community, indigenous heritage, wildlife and nature, and a variety of historical elements including the mill/lumber yard and the fishery trade within the Bay of Islands.

The project timeline remains flexible as the 2020 cruise season was recently suspended due to COVID-19. Regardless, CBPC is pleased to move forward with the project and expects the mural to have lasting impact.

KELSEY STREET, BFA

Kelsey is a multi-disciplinary artist of Mi’kmaq ancestry from Bay of Islands Newfoundland whose practice is based primarily in fibre art, printmaking, and painting. Street graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in visual arts from Grenfell Campus, Memorial University and has exhibited her work provincially and internationally at venues such as Grenfell Art Gallery, PULP Gallery, Tina Dolter Gallery, Craft Council, and Gatehouse Arts in Harlow, England.

MARSHALL BORLAND

Marshall is an artist from Central Newfoundland whose work is based in sculpture, printmaking, mural painting, and tattooing. Borland studied visual arts in the department of fine arts at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University and is a co-organizer of the Botwood Mural Art Festival. His work has been exhibited provincially and internationally at venues such as the Grenfell Art Gallery in Corner Brook, Brooklyn Art Library, and Gatehouse Arts in Harlow, England.

Request for Quotation: graphic design and creative services

Introduction and Context

Corner Brook Port Corporation (CBPC) is implementing a cruise enhancement project which aims to improve cruise passenger and crew experience at the dock facility. CBPC is seeking quotations for graphic design and creative services for this project.

The project includes many different components including improvements to the cruise welcome program through more effective way-finding signage, informative maps, backdrops/billboards that showcase Newfoundland heritage and history, and an official building sign (site identifier).

The proposed improvements will help the port better accommodate cruise ship calls in the future by providing a more welcoming and colourful arrival area and ensuring clear and concise directional and informative signage.

Scope of Work

The CBPC will evaluate all quotations submitted for this project. The successful business will be responsible for the following elements of this project:

Design and creative service.
Recommendation of all materials including most appropriate means for printing and installation.

If possible, the following items can be added into the scope of work and quoted accordingly:

Purchase, production and delivery of all materials.

Port of Corner Brook Releases Busy 2020 Cruise Schedule

Corner Brook, NL is expected to welcome more than 30,000 passengers and 14,000 crew this season. With 20 vessel calls scheduled from 12 different cruise lines, the 2020 cruise season is on track to be the most successful year to date. The season will start on Monday, May 4, 2020 with the arrival of Mein Schiff 1, a TUI Cruises vessel and will run until October 10, making it one of the longest seasons for the port. Successful Cruise Season ends at Port of Corner Brook

The fifth-largest ship in the world, MSC Meraviglia, made its maiden call on October 11 marking the end of a successful cruise season for Port of Corner Brook.

The 2019 cruise season included visits from several large ships including TUI Cruises Mein Schiff 1 and two calls from Cunard’s Queen Mary 2. The largest ship of the season was the 171,600gt

MSC Meraviglia which made its inaugural visit to Corner Brook. The MSC Meraviglia will return to Corner Brook next season. Several other maiden calls were made this year including the Mein Schiff 1 and the Zuiderdam. Maiden calls are an important indicator at the port as they not only represent Port of Corner Brook’s growth in the industry, but it highlights the increasing demand for Canada–New England cruises and Western Newfoundland as a tourism destination.

The cruise industry is considered a key economic driver for the region. This season saw a total of 18 calls to the port up from 15 calls last year. Corner Brook accommodated 24,396 cruise passengers and 11,206 crew members, representing a total increase of 37.5% from the 2018 cruise season.

Despite the three cancellations due to weather, the season was one of the best on record for the port. Jennifer Hartley, Business Development Manager at the Corner Brook Port Corporation, said

“We are pleased the results of the 2019 cruise season and are excited to announce that our projections for 2020 show continued growth with 20 ships scheduled. These results validate the work our team dedicates to the cruise industry both at the port and in the community”.

The Port of Corner Brook works closely with the Cruise Network team, a committee made up of members from the City, local businesses and other interest groups who meet regularly to help improve the overall passenger experience while in Corner Brook.

The 2020 cruise ship season will start with the return of TUI Cruises Mein Schiff 1 on Monday, May 4, the first of two calls for the vessel.
