The Return of the Cruise to the Port of Corner Brook
News Release
Following a two-year halt to the cruise industry that was felt around the globe, the Port of Corner Brook is excited to once again welcome passengers and crew back into our beautiful city.
The first Ship to make its way into port this season is the Seven Seas Navigator, which will make its first of seven trips into the Bay of Islands on May 24th. This ship can hold up to 490 passengers and 325 crew, and despite being smaller in size, the Navigator represents the official return of the cruise to the city of Corner Brook.
The cruise industry has a profound impact on the city of Corner Brook and surrounding area, significantly increasing the economic activity in the region. There are expected to be 24 calls into the Port of Corner Brook, consisting of 6 inaugural visits by different cruise ships.
The largest ship coming into the port is the Sky Princess, which is making its inaugural visit to Corner Brook. This large vessel can accommodate 3,660 passengers and 1,346 crew, and should be a sight to behold once it enters port, due to its sheer size and intriguing design.
The Corner Brook waterfront is renowned for its tremendous scenery, and one of the best ways to enjoy the view is experienced while watching cruise ships come into port, especially ones the size of the Sky Princess.
There is a wide variety of ships coming into the Bay of Islands during this cruise season, featuring vessels arriving from 5 different countries (USA, CAN, GER, ENG, ISL), bringing people from all across the globe into the community.
The majority of the calls for this upcoming season are in the months of September and October, allowing operators within the tourist industry to extend their season, something that was greatly missed over the last two years. The direct impact that the passengers and the crew of the ship make on the local economy is significant, whether by purchasing tours, utilizing local transportation services, or even increasing activity in local shops/restaurants, all were missed greatly due to the cancellations over the past two years due to Covid-19.
The cruise lines themselves also have a huge impact on the operations and economy at the Port of Corner Brook. These ships have to routinely pay for cruise services, supplies and port fees, which results in a huge boost for the city of Corner Brook and the CBPC.
With everyday life creeping back to normalcy after the profound impact of the Covid-19 pandemic it will still be essential to keep passengers, crew and staff safe from the virus. It will be important for us to continue following the guidelines set out by Transport Canada and the Provincial Government to ensure the safety of everybody involved.
The return of cruise lines into the Port of Corner Brook for the 2022 season will create a significant amount of economic activity in the Corner Brook region, new job opportunities, and increasing revenues for several local businesses.

Call for Cruise Vendors
The Port of Corner Brook is accepting applications for vendors for the 2022 cruise ship season. Vendors will be located at the newly constructed cruise passenger welcome park at the Port of Corner Brook. Selected vendors can lease a salt box style market shed for the season starting August, however preference will be given to vendors who commit to operating for the full season.
The market will be open for cruise passengers on ship days, as well as other tourism functions such as motorcoach tours. The park will only be open to the general public for special events. There will be scheduled times for vendors to access the sheds on days when there are no cruise vessels, in the event that they need to access their inventory or prepare for upcoming days.
We are looking forward to a busy season with 24 vessels scheduled from Friday, May 6th until Sunday, October 16th. The full cruise ship schedule can be viewed here.

Notice if Tariff Increase Rates 2022
Effective March 15, 2022
The Corner Brook Port Corporation (CBPC) wishes to advise that there will be a 3% increase in Harbour Administration Fees, Berthage Charges, Wharfage and Transfer Charges and a 2% increase in the Passenger Tariff under the Corner Brook Port Corporation Terminal Tariff. Rates in Schedule E are subject to a 3% Increase. All rate changes are effective March 15, 2022.
Service Charges will be applied to all overdue accounts as per section 10 of the Terminal Tariff document.

Port Tariff Notice

MSC to call Port of Corner Brook weekly
October 28, 2020 – The Corner Brook Port Corporation is pleased to advise that MSC is increasing its container service in the region with a weekly call to the Port of Corner Brook. Today’s arrival of the MSC Elbe marks the start of the increased frequency of vessels.
MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company added the Port of Corner Brook to its Canada Gulf Bridge Service in May 2020 on a bi-weekly schedule. Recognizing the strong regional economic impact, the Port of Corner Brook continues to work diligently to grow and develop the container business with increased focus on expanding import cargo. To date, more than 2,800 containers of product from the province have been exported from the Port of Corner Brook. Feedback from users indicate significant transportation cost savings with improved access to worldwide markets.

MSC’s weekly call to Corner Brook is a significant project milestone that we are happy to share with our project partners. MSC is the only international ocean carrier providing access to and from Asian and South American markets directly linked to Newfoundland. The service will now include weekly sailing from Montreal, Saint John, and Corner Brook with unmatched vessel capacity.

Public Notice: removal of debris (boulders) in Humber Arm
The public is advised that the Corner Brook Port Corporation recently submitted an application to the Minister of Transport, pursuant to the Canadian Navigable Waters Act for approval of its debris removal project.
Removal of boulders in Humber Arm, immediately adjacent to the main wharf structure at the Port of Corner Brook will be conducted. It is anticipated that the work will begin late October and conclude within three-four weeks following the start date.
The purpose of this project is to remove large rocks along the seabed near the wharf to ensure the safe berthing of large vessels.

Call for Proposals – Engineering Services
Corner Brook Port Corporation is requesting proposals from qualified engineering firms to assist the Port with the design and construction of a cold storage facility to be located dockside at the Port of Corner Brook. The services required include preliminary investigation, design, provision of a public tender and construction management.
This project, proposed by the Corner Brook Port Corporation, is intended to significantly contribute to the Newfoundland and Labrador fishing industry by providing access to safe cold storage in a location that is strategically positioned on the wharf to give direct access to the port’s international container service. The completion of the project will increase business opportunities to both fish harvesters and processors through lower costs, quicker time to market and better direct access to international markets promoting economic development for seafood processors, harvesters
and other businesses in the surrounding areas and strengthening the regional and provincial economy.

CBPC is a non-profit community-based organization responsible for the stewardship and operation of the Port of Corner Brook. CBPC oversees the management of a range of port assets including the dock, six rental buildings, three ancillary buildings and 22 acres of waterfront land. CBPC aims to facilitate port growth and development through its two-pronged mandate. The first is the provide a high-quality ocean transportation and distribution link to meet the needs of western Newfoundland and the second is to contribute to regional economic development. CBPC has primarily been an industrial port with focus on pursuing industrial projects, particularly those with the potential to increase port activity and stimulate the local and/or regional economy. CBPC’s objective is to align port capabilities and regional capacity and invest in infrastructure where viable long-term opportunities exist.

Call for Expressions of Interest – Cold Storage
Subject: Cold storage facility (fish) in Corner Brook, NL
The Corner Brook Port Corporation (CBPC) invites expressions of interest from prospective cold storage users to support the development of a cold storage facility in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador. This multi-user facility will be positioned strategically on the dock at the Port of Corner Brook to give direct access to the port’s international container service.
CBPC recognizes the limited access to proper cold storage in the region and the impact it has on the industry. Currently, many processors incur significant additional transportation costs as it is necessary to move fish off the island to be stored in facilities in other provinces. As well, due to the lack of cold storage near the Port of Corner Brook, it has been identified that the fishing industry does not have equal opportunity to benefit from the international container service available at the port. Specifically, processors planning to ship fish to international markets directly from Corner Brook are not able to safely store fish prior to its shipment. A dockside cold storage facility will provide processors with lower costs, quicker time to market and better direct access to international markets promoting economic development for seafood processors, fisherpeople and other businesses in the surrounding areas.
To address this cold storage shortage, CBPC plans to construct a public use cold storage facility for fish products at the Port of Corner Brook. The facility will have an expected holding capacity of 5,000 to 6,000 tonne. The expected budget for this project is $10 million. CBPC has funds to invest in this project however additional funding for cold storage equipment and racking will be required. While CBPC will be applying to federal programs to assist with this project we are seeking industry partners in invest in the project in exchange for guaranteed storage at a preferred rate. While project partners will be able to invest to guarantee their access to storage a limited percentage of storage will remain available for public use.
Industry partners interested in contributing to the project are requested to submit a non-binding EOI application. If you have questions or would like to discuss this opportunity prior to submitting an EOI application, you may contact Jennifer Hartley. Application are due July 10, 2020.
After the EOI applications have been received CBPC will evaluate the demand for cold storage to determine the optimal size facility to construct, given the constraints of the available space, potential investment funds and estimated construction cost. We are unable to guarantee that we will be able to construct sufficient cold storage to meet the needs of all interested applicants. The EOI process will be followed by a formal subscription process first offered to EOI applicants.
